Our History

In 1994 Deborah established Deborah Mills & Associates as a sole practitioner in Marlow, Buckinghamshire, where she was living at the time to bring up her young family. From the outset the practice attracted an impressive client base with, at that time, a particular focus on oil and gas projects, based on Deborah’s earlier career in that sector, with clients including British Gas, Esso, Shell and Canadian Occidental.

In 1997 and after partners joined the practice, the firm changed its name to DMA Legal and subsequently became a limited liability partnership. By this stage the firm had developed into a larger corporate and commercial practice with a diverse range of clients involved in energy, fashion, media and intellectual property, having to adapt its client base to service all of the legal needs of its clients whilst surviving and prospering at a time of recession. In 2000 the firm also opened a London office to service the needs of its growing corporate client base largely head-quartered in London. In 2001 the practice decided to consolidate its growth and identity in London and closed its Marlow office. The firm has been resident in the Mayfair area ever since.

In 2002 Andrew Pike, one of the longest serving partners within Burlingtons, joined as a partner to the firm, having qualified with the practice. Today Andrew heads up the Commercial Department for Burlingtons and continues to work closely with Deborah to build and manage the firm to meet its future aspirations. In 2008, after having been courted by a number of law firms in the West End and the City, the partners decided to merge the firm with that of Howard Kennedy in order to widen its contact base and to give the partners an experience of working in a larger practice. On the retirement of Trevor Newey as senior partner of Howard Kennedy, Deborah and her team decided to go it alone as Deborah wanted once again to enjoy the independence of running her own business. Trevor is now Chairman of Burlingtons.

In the spring of 2011 Deborah acquired a small business in the heart of Mayfair, London which enabled her to bring her team across to create Burlingtons Legal LLP and to continue to provide a quality service to both longstanding and new clients. In little over two years the practice is now a flourishing six partner firm with The partners all have significant experience in their respective fields and their details can be found on the [Our People] section of the website. Burlingtons now has a team of over twenty and an international office and client footprint.

We will continue to grow the practice organically and to remain in the Mayfair area which is a great location for us and our and for our clients. Our reformation as Burlingtons is born out of our belief, confidence, ambition and plans for our future growth and longevity as a business at a critical time in the rapidly changing legal market place.
